The regulations governing voluntary organisations and events are largely in line with those of a business or event of comparable size. Depending on the voluntary organisation in question, many of the potential hazards are a shared commonality. For example, the possible dangers of a mid-size Girl Guide Association camp aren’t so different to that of a Greenpeace camp.
First Aid training marks just one facet in the chain of workplace risk assessments that should cover volunteer training and information given, supervision guidelines and expectations, accident protocol, transport, fire safety, food preparation, singe-handed work, moving and handling goods, stress, violence at work, leaving the position, and any other relevant areas of assessment.
When considering training in First Aid, a volunteer or nominee must first asses their commitment to the cause, as training in First Aid is rarely free of charge and is a waste of time and money when a volunteer is not interested in their position with any sense of longevity.
Legally, the First Aid representatives of a voluntary organisation must hold a certificate of competence awarded by an organisation sanctioned by the HSE. First Aid courses are varied and cover a broad range of skills, however standard courses do not include the resuscitation of children. More often than not, training providers are more than happy to tailor regular courses in order to include specific skills such as child resuscitation. The best option is to contact a chosen provider directly and asses the needs of an organisation together.
Since First Aid courses are only valid for three years, a careful record should be kept to ensure soon-to-expire certificates are refreshed (refresher courses are generally cheaper and shorter) well within time of expiration. The new certificate will always continue from the expiry of the old one.
Voluntary organisations run largely on good will. Broadening a skill set and embarking upon the esteemed role of First Aider is no light responsibility, however it could be an incredibly rewarding one.
