Many people have received personalised greeting cards and one celebrity who is no exception is former Beetle Sir Paul McCartney. Last month, the English rocker turned 70 and charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) marked the occasion by offering him a unique card.
Rather than using the templates for birthday cards that are now available over the web, the organisation created a giant card showing costumed animals crossing Abbey Road. The item was placed on Franklin Square and passersby were encouraged to sign it. They were also handed vegan confections from Sticky Fingers.
Meanwhile, PETA gave away copies of Sir Paul’s Glass Walls exposé of the meat industry that details how animals are dealt with immediately before they are killed for food.
The card said “Happy Birthday, Paul!” and it no doubt attracted plenty of attention.
It is perhaps no surprise that PETA chose to hand over personalised greeting cards to this international star. Over the years, he has done a lot of work to raise awareness of vegetarianism. On this topic, the celebrity remarked: “If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”
He is also behind the Meat Free Monday concept, which PETA described as “highly successful”.
Of course, most people do not have the time or inclination to create huge cards like PETA did for Sir Paul, but these days it is easy for them to source a wide variety of birthday cards online that they can add their own messages and images to. Items like this continue to increase in popularity among consumers in many countries.
