Just what is the secret to good PPC management? Easy – good time management skills. There are a whole range of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly tasks that need to be achieved, and the best PPC managers complete these due to their accomplished time management abilities.
Here are some great ideas for achieving all of the tasks on your to-do list:
1. Remember you’re not a superhero. You’re also not wet behind the ears, so find a balance and don’t overload yourself or under challenge yourself either. Taking on too much will lead to burn-out, whereas simply coasting will cause your accounts to fizzle. Assess realistically what can be achieved within a certain time and choose the amount of tasks accordingly.
2. Find closure. When a project or task is finished it’s time to let go. This allows you to feel a sense of accomplishment and allows you to look forward to the next job. You can take time to offer feedback and results to other people involved, and communicate when the project is finished.
3. Look ahead before you leave the office. Before you go home at night plan your to-do list for the next day. This will ensure that you add any leftover tasks from today to the top of tomorrow’s list. You will also find it easier to leave work behind and get a good night’s sleep feeling fully prepared for the following day. Add it into your daily routine and you’ll soon start feeling more organised.
4. Keep a note of things to do. Throughout the course of a day you’ll think of several things you need to do. Perhaps a chance conversation reminds you of something – write it down. Take a pad with you into meetings so that you can add any extra tasks to your to-do list.
5. Work out your priorities. A big stumbling block is when a task list is drawn up but no process of prioritisation is followed. List the most important tasks at the top and then work down. This will be an on-going process so be prepared to reshuffle and rewrite your to-do list.
6. Be prepared to say no. Throughout a normal day you may be called upon to do other tasks which haven’t been planned for. Sometimes you can squeeze something in, and other times you just can’t. Think about when you say yes and have the confidence to say no when you can’t.
7. Take a break. When you manage to complete a large project or several smaller tasks allow yourself a minute to relax and refresh. Giving yourself a little time away from the PC screen will help you feel energised and motivated to attack the next batch of tasks on your list.
