Urban and suburban crime has been on a steady rise over the past few years and whilst this may seem extremely disconcerting for many of us, it may be more comforting to know that these crimes can easily be avoided.
Many thieves have realised that the best items to steal are those that can be found with the minimum risk and resold at a great value. Whilst traditionally thieves would target jewellery and high-tech electronic gadgets as they seemed instantly more appealing, there are many items that we all use day in and day out that are often of an equally high second hand value – power tools.
Not only are hand tools and power tools usually extremely easy to access, being clearly visible in sheds and garages which are far easier to enter than the main house, but many people don’t actually consider that these items could easily be stolen from under their noses and as such will often leave them on view in the front garden or driveway. In turn, the chance for opportunistic theft is even higher.
It can often be beneficial to look at buying new power and hand tools and storing these in a very safe place, whilst allowing older tools to be more easily seen. This will ensure that, even if you do see a theft occur, it is only older items that will be stolen.
However, it could also be beneficial to simply hide all of your tools out of sight and ensure that they are always put away after use. Having a place to lock up your more expensive tools will mean that far fewer people try to break into your sheds and garages as they cannot be sure as to what they will find. In turn, not only does this remove the cost of replacing items, but also the cost of repairing any damage to your home.
