There are many myths about what a kitten should or shouldn’t eat and drink. The most persistent of these is that they need milk. Whilst cats, like humans, are indeed originally fed on a mother’s milk, as they grow, the need for milk changes and your pet will be far healthier and more hydrated if they drink water rather than milk. Not only this but, whilst they may like the taste of dairy products, having too much milk can even make your pet ill.
When it comes it to food itself, be sure to offer your cat the best possible nutrition. Whilst it may seem like all kitten food will be the same, in reality there can be a huge difference from one brand to another and even between one type of food to another. Not only should you offer them very specific pet foods that are nutritionally balanced and come recommended by your vet, but you should also limit human food and treats as much as possible if you want them to remain as healthy as they can. Therefore, avoid buying any food based on price alone.
Should you decide to change the food you offer your pet, it is wise to do this gradually. A dramatic change in food can put your kitty off or even make them ill. Instead, mix the new food with the old food, gradually altering the ratio until the diet is strictly using the new pet food.
Try to offer your pet both dry and wet food. Wet food is often the better choice for a cat, but it is also wise to leave dry food out so that they can top up their diet if you are not free to feed them on time. However, be sure that both types of food are ‘complete’ foods and nutritionally balanced.
