Asian company EVA Air, based in Taiwan, is an impeccable international airline that provides passenger flights throughout the world. They made their debut in the late 1980s and continue to be a mostly privately owned airline. There are a variety of investors that have put millions of dollars into this company. Slogans used by EVA Air are very memorable because of their unique marketing approach. 10 years after the company started, their slogan was “Fly EVA Air and Feel the Difference”. Keeping up with the times, they have modified their slogan to state “Sharing the World, Flying Together”. The following is a quick overview of this airline and its rise to success. Wanting the first airline in Taiwan, that was non-publicly held, Evergreen Marine Corporation began an airline in 1988, which later changed its name to EVA. When the government decided to reduce the air transportation restrictions, that is when the move came about. Anytime an occurrence takes place that gives an economic advantage, business people who can afford it, will do it. The standard types of requirements were issued by the government. Certain options to ensure the stability of the airlines were expected, by the Taiwanese leadership, to be in place.
Just a decade ago, EVA started making massive strides forward to expand their international presence. Expansion requires enough airplanes and airliners to cover all of the business that you were going to want to do. One of their most expensive but thoughtful decisions was ordering long-range heavy aircraft from Boeing called 777-300ERs. Boeing 777 variants also became part of the fleet. These planes were used to start business relations with America and Europe as well. To increase their capability of serving the Asian community, Airbus A330-200 were also ordered.
EVA encountered severe financial distress beginning in 2007 as fuel prices rose by almost 35%. The company incurred heavy losses due to this even though all airlines were trying to deal with this scenario, as well. The airline industry worldwide is in a precarious position when it comes to fuel prices, which cause profits or losses. The airline industry is a special type of business because it is so depending on lower fuel costs to continue to operate. Any type of cost reduction procedures, will cut out some jobs, but that is what it takes to save a company, and this is what it took for EVA to survive. Surviving a worldwide economic collapse in the airline industry takes many drastic measures. Their history is relatively brief, only starting up in 1989. However, they have made strong moves to capture and consolidate the domestic Taiwan air passenger market. After surviving the bad times, they now have ideas of expanding their international markets, and have ordered long haul passenger jets. When fiscal numbers returned to profitability again in the later 2000s, it was good times for EVA. What EVA has done would be most remarkable for any airline, but especially so for one that is privately owned. Especially since money is harder to come by without the backing of the public share.
