You may have seen an increase in the use of Vibram Five Fingers sports shoes being used by athletes or just people at your local gym or running in the park. So, what exactly are they?
Vibram toe shoes are a unique style of shoe that refuse to be put into any particular category. They can be used for a variety of sports and activities, including climbing, running, kayaking, surfing and sailing. However, they are also an excellent choice for anyone who takes part in martial arts, yoga, Pilates, or any kind of fitness training.
The style may have started out as somewhat of a gimmick, but since then their reputation has grown as one of the best sporting shoes on the market. The style developed out of research that suggests that most runners heelstrike when they run, i.e. they land on the heel of the foot. However, it has been shown to be more effective to land with either a flat foot (midfoot strike) or on the ball of the foot (forefoot strike), something that happens more regularly when a runner is barefoot or only partially shod. The Vibram Five Fingers encourages either a midfoot of forefoot strike to increase running capabilities.
It has also been found that Vibram toe shoes build up muscle strength in the feet and lower legs, improving speed, agility, strength and balance. These shoes are a viable alternative to a variety of other footwear, and so you may never need to be another pair of sports shoes again. They can be used instead of running shoes, walking boots, climbing shoes or just for a workout at the gym.
Despite their appearance, the shoes are incredibly hard wearing whilst providing comfort for the wearer. They also provide protection against odour, staining and deterioration caused by bacteria, fungus and other microorganisms.
