The warm weather at various parts of the year has been a source of pleasure for many people this year. However, the warm weather has resulted in a lot more flies than usual and in some parts of the United Kingdom, this warm weather and farmland have combined to create a real problem.
One parish, St Andrews, found that their location between two farms and a chicken farm resulted in a huge increase in the number of flies. Whilst members of the community recognised that the farms could not be held responsible for simply going about their work, solutions needed to be found.
Long periods of sun at various points in the year also led to fly eggs hatching early resulting in households being affected by the number of flies, which went into the hundreds. In fact, the problem became so bad that the Department of Environmental Health and Pollution Regulation was contacted.
The Department felt that the cause of the problem was the heat and the high percentage of farmland in the area. However, the department also had some tips for people, recommending that people do not leave any food out as flies can spread disease very quickly.
Furthermore, another top tip from the department was to use net curtains. This are seen as a top method of combating flies as they simply can’t get past them but you can still keep windows open to keep your own house cool.
