Many companies have to invest in glazing maintenance and glazing repairs in order to keep their buildings in good working order. The same will be true for the new Siemens Pavilion, which is to be constructed in London Docklands
ISG has been awarded the contract to construct the £30 million sustainability centre, which is being designed to minimise its use of energy.
One key factor in this will be its windows, which are to be used to maximise the volume of natural light entering the building.
The material will be high-performance glass, which will need glazing maintenance and glazing repairs.
This is not the only eco-friendly feature of the construction. There will also be solar water heating, rain water harvesting technology, photovoltaic cells, a ground source heat pump and solar water heating.
Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, the building will become a permanent exhibition and education space showcasing green technologies.
There will be a large interactive exhibition space complete with education facility and cafe. In addition, it will house a 300-seat auditorium, as well as meeting rooms and office accommodation for around 230 Siemens employees.
Building work is set to commence this month and it is hoped the first visitors will be able to see the completed project by the spring of 2012.
The go-ahead for the initiative was given by Newham Council and it will form the centrepiece of mayor Boris Johnson’s Green Enterprise District in east London.
A report by the local authority described the pavilion as “an important catalyst in enabling the Royal Docks and the wider north east London region to establish itself as a Green Enterprise District”, The Wharf reports.
It added: “It will serve to bring back into use what is currently a neglected and underused site which has a prominent presence at the western end of Royal Victoria Dock.”
