Should you find a bee’s nest in a chimney, tree, attic or shed, it can be very disconcerting. However, the most important thing in such a situation is to remain calm and remember that bees will usually only sting when antagonised. Obviously, you will want to get the problem sorted as soon as possible, but it is important that you do not overreact as you may cause the bees to become agitated and therefore more dangerous.
The first port of call will often be to the council or a pest control agency who will be able to come and remove the hive for you, safely and effectively. However, there are also other options that many people might not instantly think of.
Keeping bees can be very rewarding both financially in terms of the honey they can create as well as simply in terms of enjoyment as a pastime. Not only will keeping bees mean they produce a great deal of honey for you, but they will also aid pollination which can be perfect for anyone growing crops.
It is a very easy past time and will only usually take up around ten to twenty minutes of your time per hive each week. Therefore, should you find a hive, it may well be worthwhile for you to get your own beekeeping suits and keep that hive. Obviously you won’t want it in your chimney, but purchasing a hive yourself can mean that you can easily move it (as long as it can be easily reached) and take the bees to a new home outside.
Beekeeping suits and hives can be relatively cheap and buying them and moving the hive yourself can often not cost that much more than having experts move it, but will leave you with the ability to keep the bees yourself and benefit from all their great qualities at the same time.
