Washing your wig
Taking care when washing and avoiding rough handling when cleaning human hair wigs will reduce the amount of hair lost at each wash. Before you start, you will need a large bowl, ideally a washing up bowl or similar, special wig shampoo and conditioner, an afro comb and a wig stand for holding it in place as you brush it out. If you haven’t got a specialist shampoo then you can use shampoo and conditioner which has been designed for highlighted or bleached hair.
Before washing your wig, brush it carefully from root to tip to remove any tangles and knots. Using warm water with shampoo mixed through it; soak the wig for around 5 minutes to remove any grease, styling product or other residue. Carefully remove the wig from the bowl and rinse under warm running water in the direction of the hair to remove the shampoo. You can then smooth a little more shampoo through the hair, but do not rub or scrub as this will only serve to break the hairs. Rinse the shampoo out and apply conditioner, using about three times as much as you would use on your own hair. Leave it in for 10 minutes then gently rinse out.
Drying your wig
When all the conditioner is removed, lay your wig carefully on a towel to absorb any excess water. Use an afro comb or wide toothed comb to gently remove any tangles. Human hair wigs are most delicate at the roots, so be careful not to pull or tug on the root area of the wig. Once the excess water has dried off the wig can be styled and brushed as usual using a hairdryer or whatever styling product you wish.
