The number of estate agents in the UK has grown significantly over the years, offering far greater a choice for those looking to sell their properties. However, as with anything, the more that something increases in volume; there is a good chance that the level of service will decrease. As such, the need for research is greater.
With more agents to choose from, it does allow vendors to search for a more preferable deal on cost. This is excellent news of course, but can present somewhat of an issue in itself. Whilst it is natural to be attracted by those offering the smallest fees, why those fees are so small should perhaps be questioned.
Seeking the opinion of friends and families can help of course but, these are really only relevant if they have recently gone through first hand experiences with an agent. The longevity of a business could also be considered a good indicator of their quality but, past results do not always guarantee future performance.
Taking a look at the number of boards that the local estate agents have up can provide interesting information. A large number of boards suggest something positive perhaps, but, it is important to quantify what percentage of these say “For Sale” against those saying “Sold”.
Today, there is also another way that sellers can get an understanding of who the best estate agents really are. There are a number of websites offering online reviews and ratings, which are very useful. However, there could be a problem here too, as many agents “plant” good reviews.
At Meet My Agent, this does not happen. A comparison platform for bona fide previous customers of estate agents, we use their reviews to compile entirely independent ratings. Powering the ability of sellers to really make an informed decision, it helps them get the levels of service they deserve.
